There are many options when finishing a basement.

Drywall- one of the most common choices – is also one of the worst. Even "green board" will have no warranty against mold. This article outlines the disadvantages of drywall.

Old habits die hard. The same goes for building practices. When it comes to finishing a basement, builders tend to do the same thing they’ve always done- especially if it’s a cheap solution for them. Why would they change what’s making them money? I mean, it’s not like they have to live with the job, right? The bottom line is this: a basement environment is different than any other place in the home, and drywall is simply not made for this environment. If you install drywall into a basement, it’s probably not going to work, and even if it does, it won’t be the best building material for the job.

Below are four good reasons to drop drywall from your basement finishing plan. Holding its Own When it comes to shelves, cabinets, or anything else that weighs over 10 pounds, drywall is in for a real challenge. Generally, this means that you’ll have to find wall studs to use to mount the weight, which can be a difficult and imperfect process. You’ll be limited to places where studs are located and will find yourself at the mercy of sometimes unevenly spaced studs. Unfortunately, it’s very popular to want to mount things such as shelves, cabinets, pictures, or perhaps a plasma TV on finished basement walls. And just as easily as it crumbles under too much weight, it’s very easy for you, your children, or a well-placed doorknob to leave an unsightly hole in it.

 Stud wall design plays an important role in noise transmission from room

Construction begins with a wider than normal top and bottom beam, usually a 2 x 6 or a 2 x 8 instead of a 2 x 4. 2 X 4 studs are screwed in an alternating pattern along the base plate. How To Hang Drywall, Or Not?

Dry ceiling before you drywall. This is literally the top tip when talking about how to hang drywall. Using a long builders’ level,

check your wall studs for any warped boards. Only straight flat studs will give you a level surface on which to hang drywall.

People, especially the female of the species will quickly spot the bulges if you fail to put furring strips on to the frame around items that may stick out beyond your drywall studs. It’s all in the eye when learning how to hang drywall. How to hang drywall sheets is horizontally and from the top, down to the bottom. Be sure to draw an outline grid of your studs on the floor. When you want to find them later for hanging pictures on you really don’t want to rely on hammer sonar.

A top tip on how to hang drywall when you are working alone is to hammer four nails in a row into four adjacent studs about 50" inches from the ceiling. This enables you to lift the sheet (lift and manhandle with a straight back and use your legs only) and rest it on the nails. Hang all of the drywall upper sheets before going onto the lower sheets.

The tapered edges should always butt together. Cut the panels about 1/2-inch short of the floor to allow for any unevenness in the floor or ceiling. The gaps at the bottom of the wall will be covered with your baseboard. A final top tip on how to hang drywall when on your own is to raise each panel into place with a pair of foot levers. A sturdy piece of clean wood on top of a small wedge will enable you to lever the drywall sheet into position while you drive the first screws or nails. Quality Control Check For Drywall Finishing

Do a walk through eyeballing the job carefully.

You will find obvious mistakes this way and can either correct them immediately or mark them with a pencil to come back later and do a touch up application.

Change lighting and search again for flaws. After all, your room will be used with natural and artificial lighting. Some errors will not appear unless there is bright artificial lighting. Use "touch" to find uneven drywall application. Run the palm of your hand over areas to make sure the whole wall feels even. Perform another inspection after applying the primer coat of paint.

Do this again using both natural and artificial lighting. There are several things to look for when inspecting your drywall finishing work. Obvious scratches. These need to be coated with joint compound again and re-sanded. If you find a swollen area in the finished mud, it can be one of two things. Hopefully, it’s only that the area needs to be sanded down.

Sometimes though, it will mean that the tape coat does not have enough mud (joint compound) under it and there is an air bubble. This requires carefully cutting a small slit into the dried tape using a utility knife. Lifting the tape slightly and pressing more mud under it. Finally apply another coat of mud after the area is dry and sand it again. A swollen area in raw sheetrock (area of sheetrock that has not been coated with mud) will mean that there is an actual flaw in the wallboard. This can also be repaired by cutting the top paper of the sheetrock around the flaw, peeling it off and filling it with mud using a smooth even coat. A small area will usually only need one coat of compound…larger areas two or more. Again sand until the wall feels and looks completely smooth. Check around light boxes to ascertain that there will be no small gaps showing after installing the cover plates.

If the gap is too large, a small length of tape should be applied and finished to cover the gap. Don’t forget to inspect ceiling fixtures, washer fixtures,etc. Make sure all screw or nail heads are covered and smooth unless you’re sure they will be covered by trim. If there is spray texture used, make sure it has been scraped and sanded smooth in areas where there may be over-spray such as the top area of the walls when the ceiling has been sprayed. After spray texture has been applied, look for spots where it may be too lightly sprayed. NOTE: If you’re spraying yourself, be careful not to apply too heavy a coat. It’s much easier to lightly re-spray an area than to repair a coat that is too heavy. Check around all beaded areas to make sure they are smooth and without scratches, dents etc. These are the most common problem areas when finishing drywall and you will be much more satisfied with your product if you perform your own quality control testing before the final painting or papering of your walls.
